English Malayalam Names of Spices

List of some spices with their Malayalam, Hindi and English names along with pictures.





Kurumulaku – Pepper
Perum Jeerakam - Fennel Seeds/ Sweet Cumin
Perum Jeerakam (Saumph or Moti saumph in Hindi) – Fennel Seeds/ Sweet Cumin
Black Cumin
Karinjeerakam (Kaala Jeera or Shah Jeera in Hindi) – Black Cumin/ Black Caraway.
Nigella Seeds are also known as Black Cumin though it is entirely different from Kaala Jeera.

Uluva - Fenugreek

Jeera Aloo

  • Potato 4
  • Oil 2tsp
  • Mustard 1tsp
  • Black cumin 1tsp
  • Fennel seeds 1/4tsp
  • Cumin seeds 1tsp
  • Chilli powder 1tsp
  • Turmeric powder 1/4tsp
  • Green Chilli 2 (slit into half)
  • Salt to taste
  • Water as required
  • Coriander leaves 2tsp (finely chopped)

Peel potatoes and cut into medium size pieces.

Heat a kadai. Add oil and crack mustard, fennel, cumin & aniseed in it.

Now add potatoe pieces and saute for 2 min.

Add green chilli, turmeric powder, chilli powder and enough water and cook till the potatoes are done.

Dry the aloo on low flame if any water is left.

Remove from flame and garnish with coriander.
